Overview

Arcade version of Frogger
Arcade version of Frogger
Frogger is an action game originally released in arcades by Konami in 1981 and later ported to numerous home computers and game consoles. In the game players control a frog with the goal of safely guiding it past the many dangers into one of 5 homes at the top of the screen.

Gameplay

Players control a frog which starts out at the bottom of the screen. The screen is split into two sections, a road taking up the bottom half and a river in the top half. The goal is to safely guide the frog across the road and river to one of the five homes (shown as empty spaces) along the top of the screen. When the player guides a frog into all five homes the level is complete and the game restarts with an increased level of difficulty. Along the way there are many dangers players need to navigate past. On the road there are constantly cars and trucks travelling in both directions that are deadly if hit. As the game progresses, traffic becomes denser and some of the cars drive increasingly faster. In the middle of the screen prior to the river is a median; on early levels this section is safe, but on later levels a deadly snake may be present. The final section to cross is the river; in the game, the frog is unable to swim so players need to hop across the water by jumping on logs, turtles, and the backs of alligators. Players need to be careful as some objects are more dangerous than others to jump to; some of the turtles dive underwater randomly and the frog dies if on a turtle when this happens. Likewise if an alligator mouth is open jumping to close is also deadly. As the game increases in difficulty snakes and an otter also appear. In addition to these dangers, the frog must stay within the screen; going past either the left or right edge of the screen causes a life to be lost (although in some home versions of the game there is an option to allow the frog to wrap around to the opposite side safely). Lastly, the game is timed; if the frog doesn't reach a home when the timer runs out a life is lost. The time resets each time a frog makes it home safely.

There are several bonuses that appear occasionally in the game. The first is the lady frog; she sometimes appears on one of the logs in the middle of the river. If the player rescues her and successfully makes it to one of the homes then bonus points are earned. also, from time to time a fly will appear in one of the homes along the top; if the frog enters the home when the fly is present then additional points are earned.
