The Atari 2600 (originally known as the Atari Video Computer System, or simply the Atari VCS) is a video game console released by Atari, Inc. in September, 1977. The system was a huge success and the first to popularize the format of a microprocessor controlled console with games swappable on cartridges. The Atari 2600 also led to the creation of the first third party game developers and publishers including Activision, Inc.. The system was based on the MOS Technology 6507 running at 1.19 MHz and included only 128 bytes of RAM.
